Dhola and Maru

Dhola and Maru The ballad of Dhola and Maru was composed in 1620 by Kallol a poet Raval Hariraj of Jaisalmer in Dingal   the language used by bards of ancient Rajasthan. There was a severe drought in Rajasthan and bards were sent by Nalwar and Pugal to sing the Raag Malhaar so that the drought would end and rain could bring a respite to the people of desert. Raag Malhaar was the music used to create rain during drought. Pugal’s Maharaja,Pingal with his wife and daughter, (Marvani)Maru reached Pushkar to invoke the rain. Also Nalwar’s Maharaja, Nal with his wife and his son (SalhaKumar)Dhola reached there for same reasons. The two kings became good friends and sealed alliance between Nalwar and Pugal. Maru was only one and half year old and Dhol was three year old but both were bonded in relationship of eternity. As if to bless the alliance between Dhol and Maru the gods showered their love as rain on the child couples.   The children were married and were to be brought up

A bird that mimics Shiva- Blue Throated Bird Neelkanthi

A bird that mimics shiva How sparrow got a blue throat is a poignant story of Bhima and red throated sparrow turned blue. A lovable mythology from the soils of India. It was the beginning of the season of spring and the cold winter was coming to an end. The forest was a painted in myriad of colors by flowers and the air was filled with joyful cried of birds and brooks babbled and waterfalls roared. The forest was so scenic with the mountains rising in the distance and Bheema was walking under the canopy of evergreen trees, birds twittering and hopping for grains. Butterflies in many colours hovering around the plants and buzzing of bees as they fly past the flowers. Bhima was lost in the beauty of nature around him. The serene atmosphere lulled Bhima to sleep. Bhima , the Pandava warrior fell asleep on the forest floor after having a sumptuous meal. He did not see a little snake slithering in the grass behind him. The snake bit him behind his ear and Bhima woke up because of t

The tree that takes away grief

The tree that takes away grief “Ashoka” word means that one who is free from Shokam (grief/Sadness) We all know that Sita was placed in Ashoka Vatika(Grove of Ashoka tree)with demons as guards after her abduction by Ravana. This myth was from Bhavishya Puranam, a long time before Sita was abducted by Ravana Once upon a time in the Bhil tribe, there lived a cannibal by the name Sashoka. He was terror of forest in Central India. He used to feast on innocent travellers or pilgrims crossing the forest area. Sashoka was merciless and never spared anyone. People ran away when they saw him coming their way. Once Sashoka was on search for his prey and he chances upon a hut. Sashoka looks into the hut and he sees the peaceful face of a hermit who is undeterred by the bird’s song and lost in his meditation. Sashoka felt an unknown attraction for the sage as he had seen only panic stricken face of his prey and the serene face of the ascetic was an contrast to the people he meet. Sa
