Sakkiya Nayanmar


Sakkiya Nayanar was born in Vellalar caste in Thirucchangamanagi near Kanchipuram. He was frustrated with his wordly life and wanted liberation , he was searching for ways to attain moksha and set out towards Kanchipuram. Sakkiya Nayanar followed Buddhism and trying to attain liberation of soulsbut one day while he was begging for alms he saw a Shiva Lingam on the the way and was attracted towards the lingam.

Sakkiya Nayanar wanted to explore his attraction towards the shiva lingam, so he sat down and started meditation of Lord. He had a belief that God always looks behind external appearance , so he maintained his Buddhist appearance . he believed that Lord Shiva was so innocent that he could take whatever his devotees offered. He used to worship Lord shiva by throwing stones at him. Sakkiya Nayanar made this as a ritual to throw stone at the lingam after his prayers everyday, only then he would consume his daily meal.





One day Sakkiya Nayanar forgot to do his ritual, when he was going to eat his lunch he remembered that he forgot to htrow stone at the Lord and was upset and he set out towards the temple without bothering about his hunger. He reached the temple and threw the stone at the Lord. Lord Shiva and his consort Parvathi devi came down to earth to bless on the Nandhi Thevar. Sakkiya Nayanar attained Moksha as a result of his undivided devotion.

Poompuhar- Kannagi story in stone

Kannagi Kannagi is an embodient of Virtue in Tamilnadu. we can see Kannagi statue in Poompuhar where her right hand (Dakshina Hastam) is in Abhaya mudra . Abhay mudra means offering protection to people who submit to her feets. The left hand ( Vama Hastam) is in Kati mudra or Kati Vilambitha mudra. Kati means 'hip' and 'Vilambitha' means hanging. the hand is bend at wrist and placed beneath left of hip. the significance of this mudra is to offer protection to devotees i.e. in times of deluge the waters shall not go beyond the hip. We know that Poompuhar was once swollen by deluge. Hence the statue was placed with Kati hastam to protect the Poompuhar.
