Nava Veeras - Murugan

Nava Veeras

They are brave attenders of Lord Muruga. They were born to Nava Shakthis. Nava shakthis  were women born out of nine precious stone which fell from the anklet of Parvathi Devi's lotus feet.  The scattered ratnas from Parvathi's anklet became Nine womans.

The Navashakthi's are Manickavalli ( Ruby ie red in colour) , Muthuvalli (Pearl ie white in colour), Pushparagavalli(Yellow sapphire), Komedhagavalli (Hessonite  reddish brown), Vaiduryavalli ( Cat's eye Pale green colour) Vairavalli( Diamond beautiful like a white diamond) , Margathavalli (Emerald ie green in colour), Pavalavalli(coral Dull red in colour) and Neelavalli(Blue Sapphire dark blue )

Accidentally NavaShakthi was impregnated by Lord Shiva as his eyes fell on them.

Parvathi was furious at Navashakthi who were pregnant because of Lord Shiva's gazed upon them whereas she is the rightfull person who should bear his child and her inability to bear a child incensed her anger. She cursed the Navashakthi to live their life carrying their child in their womb exceeding the usual ten months so they could suffer for the heartache which Parvathi Devi was feeling.

Navashakthi were disheartened and asked Shiva to reduce their curse . Shiva advised Navashakthi to ask forgiveness from Parvathi as she was the mother of the world . Navashakthi pleaded with Parvathi  to reduce their curse as they were unable to bear the pain of carrrying a child for years , Suffering from itching and boils and rashes all over their body.

Navashakthi's plight moved the heart of  Parvathi Devi and she gave them relief from their pregnacy blues. Navasakthi delivered fully grown male children and was relieved from their extended pregnancy. The sons of Navashakthis are called Nava Veerar's. The Nava veeras are Veerabahu Thevar (eldest)  who is the commander in charge of Lord Murugas army in his fight against Surapadhman and his brothers.

Veerabahu Thevar was the eldest among the nava veeras like  Veera Kesari( one who is as courageous as a lion), Veera Mahendra (one who is courageous like Indra and controls the sky), Veera Maheswara( one who is very powerful like Lord shiva), Veera Purandhara(Puram means city and dhara means destroyer ; one who boldly destorys and razes cities into dust), Veera Rakkadha, Veera Marthanda, Veera Anthaka and Veeradheera( one with utmost courageousness).
They alleged their loyalty and devotion to Lord Muruga as how Navashakthi pledged their obseiance to Goddess Parvathi devi.
